Things to do in and around Nice

Restaurant JAN

JAN, an intimate 20-seater restaurant in Nice's Old Port district, takes guests on a culinary exploration using only local and seasonal ingredients from surrounding farms on the Cote'd Azur. Owner, Chef and Culinary Director Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen's one of the first South African chefs to obtain a Michelin star has captured the imaginations of foodies around the world. "Growing up on a farm in Middelburg, a town in the northern reaches of South Africa, this approach was our way of life, and a passion that informed the concept for Restaurant JAN from the start. Here, the idea of adapting and serving South African favourites like melktert, bobotie, biltong and other dishes to discerning culinary audiences in Europe was born. As a tribute to my homeland and a nod to my adopted city, the JAN team constantly strives for contrasts between flavours, origins and cultures through a mix of French and South African cuisine" - Jan.

Le Mont Boron

It was the forest engineer Prosper Demontzey (1831-1898) who undertook the afforestation of the site with Aleppo pines. There is also a large population of carob trees and wild olive trees. A place for walking, relaxing and picnicking, it offers superb panoramas. 11 km of marked trails in the heart of a 57 ha Mediterranean forest (Aleppo pines and rare species).

From the fort of Mont-Alban, a unique panorama unfolds from Italy to the Estérel, embracing both the harbor of Villefranche, the peninsula of Cap-Ferrat, Nice and the mountainous reliefs of the Alps.

Parc Vigier

Located near the Port, this 10,000m2 Mediterranean garden open on the sea offer a wide range of exceptional trees, two of the most remarkable being the wild date palm (Phoenix zeylanica) and Agathis.

This public garden is located on the former property of Viscount Vigier. From the end of the 19th century, Viscount Vigier had acclimatised many exotic plants to this garden and it was here that a Phoenix canariensis was planted for the first time in France in 1864.
